Online and In-Person Couples Therapy

Relationships are an essential part of our lives. The people we are surrounded with shape our days, and that includes our romantic partners. When romantic relationships are going well, that might mean our lives are richer and more satisfying, so it’s no surprise that, when romantic relationships are suffering, the opposite is true. Online couples therapy from Lakeside Counseling can help you to build, sustain, and restore healthy, fulfilling relationships. Wherever you are in your partnership, our therapists can work with you to achieve specific relationship goals, overcome those bickering matches that never seem to get resolved, and move forward with your partnership. Learn more about what to expect on this page or get in touch with us to schedule your consultation today.

Why Should We Consider Relationship Therapy?

Many couples take the “If it isn’t broken, why fix it?” stance on relationship therapy. They end up foregoing visiting with a therapist until there is a deep rift in their partnership. While therapy can help heal wounds and address deep-seeded issues within relationships, that’s not the only reason you may want to consider relationship therapy. We can help couples throughout their relationship, including:

  • Establishment – early relationship or premarital counseling can help you lay a solid foundation for a healthy, thriving relationship you can work to build together.

  • Maintenance – even if things are “okay,” therapy can help you sustain your partnership and ensure you have a strong, fulfilling relationship whether you’ve been together for years or decades.

  • Repairs – after a rift, betrayal, or breakdown in a relationship, therapy can help you find the path to move forward together (or apart if that’s what’s best for both parties).

What Happens During Couples Counseling Sessions?

Getting started with couples counseling usually involves a series of intake sessions. We’ll begin with an appointment with both partners present. During this initial session, we’ll talk through your reasons for visiting, goals for couples therapy, and questions you have about the process. Then, you’ll schedule individual sessions with your clinician. These visits exist to ensure that each person feels safe and comfortable opening up about their concerns. While your therapist will encourage you to share many of the details from your individual session during couples counseling, this will be your choice. Finally, we’ll come back together to create a plan for your ongoing relationship therapy sessions.

While talking through concerns and resolving issues is a fundamental part of relationship therapy, an even more essential aspect of the process is developing strategies and skill to problem solve together outside of therapy sessions. Couples counseling strives to assist partners in communicating more effectively, healing and maintaining healthy attachment bonds, and setting healthy boundaries. These skills will help your relationship flourish beyond your time in therapy.
