Online and In-Person Therapy for BIPOC/AAPI

Our Therapists Offer Respect, Affirmation & Safety – For ALL Clients

The world may finally be catching on to the fact that individuals who are black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have experienced generations of discrimination, racism, and violence. While members of the BIPOC/AAPI communities experience disproportionately higher levels of stress and trauma, they are significantly less likely to seek therapy. At Lakeside Counseling, we think it’s time for that to change. Our practice is committed to providing diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist therapy. We offer online therapy for BIPOC/AAPI individuals in a safe environment where you can rest assured you will always be welcomed and treated with respect. Our culturally competent therapists have the necessary training and experience to provide affirming therapy to help you feel seen and heard and welcomed exactly as you are. You can learn more about therapy for BIPOC/AAPI individuals on this page or by reaching out to schedule a consultation.

Why Can BIPOC/AAPI Individuals Benefit from Therapy?

People in the BIPOC/AAPI communities can benefit from therapy for all the same reasons that many people seek therapy, including difficult life transitions, complex emotions, grief and loss, relationship struggles, and challenging familial dynamics. While the reason for seeking therapy may be the same, our therapists understand that BIPOC/AAPI individuals are also managing higher levels of stress and fear due to discrimination and bias that can compound the other life struggles they’re working through.

Whether you’re planning for an upcoming life change, trying to sustain a romantic partnership, or dealing with any difficulty the world is throwing your way, therapy can help. Our therapists are culturally competent. That means we have taken time to develop our understanding of how racial identity impacts our clients’ world experiences. In addition to understanding how BIPOC/AAPI client experiences differ, we are also able to provide effective therapy interventions to address specific issues within the BIPOC/AAPI communities, including:

  • Racial bias and discrimination

  • Racism in all its facets (from microaggressions to violence)

  • Workplace and interpersonal issues related to racial prejudice

  • Re-traumatization due to internalizing violence and hatred enacted on others

What Happens During Therapy Sessions for BIPOC/AAPI Individuals?

During therapy sessions, our therapists will help you hold space for all aspects of who you are as an individual as well as honoring and affirming your experiences. At your intake therapy session, your therapist will talk with you about the reasons you scheduled a therapy session. Then, we’ll partner to develop a plan to help you make positive change and achieve specific goals. Many of our BIPOC/AAPI clients find themselves minimizing racially fraught experiences that truly have a profound impact on them. As part of the therapy process, our therapists will help you acknowledge the way that bias, discrimination, and hatred may be impacting your life and adding to any concerns that brought you to our practice as work together to heal and resolve the pain of these experiences.
